Government Employment Rises 3.9% in First Eight Months of 2024

According to data released by the Statistical Service on Wednesday, government employment in Cyprus saw notable growth in the first eight months of 2024. From January to August, the average total government employment reached 54,227 individuals, reflecting an increase of 3.9% or 2,019 employees compared to the same period in 2023.

As of August 2024, the total number of government employees stood at 52,452. In the Civil Service sector, 12,035 employees held permanent positions, 4,222 were on contracts of indefinite duration, 1,209 had contracts of definite duration, and 5,848 were paid hourly. Permanent employees made up 51.6% of the workforce, while those on definite duration contracts accounted for just 5.2%, the smallest group within the Civil Service.

In the Educational Service, the workforce included 11,883 permanent employees, 1,155 on indefinite contracts, 2,013 on definite contracts, and 142 hourly-paid workers. Here, permanent employees represented the largest group, making up 78.2% of the workforce, while hourly-paid workers comprised a mere 0.9%, the lowest proportion.

For Security Forces, there were 8,354 permanent staff, 4,547 on indefinite contracts, 296 on definite contracts, and 748 hourly workers. Permanent employees also formed the majority in this sector, accounting for 59.9% of the total workforce, whereas those with definite contracts represented the smallest group at just 2.1%.
