At the Digital Agenda Cyprus Summit 2024, David Rowan, founding editor of WIRED UK, delivered an eye-opening presentation on how artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies will shape the future. Held annually in Nicosia, this summit draws together leaders from various industries, innovators, and policymakers to explore the latest tech trends. Rowan’s talk stood out for its mix of optimism and caution, particularly regarding the rapid advancements in AI and their implications for Cyprus.

In an interview during the event (full interview below), Rowan expressed confidence in Cyprus’ potential to become a key player in the AI revolution. “We’re at the start of a major shift in communication, production, and value creation. There’s no reason Cyprus can’t be at the forefront, with AI driving the next wave of growth,” he stated. Rowan emphasized that the timing is perfect for Cyprus to seize this opportunity, especially as AI continues to revolutionize sectors like medicine, materials science, and transportation.

He predicted that AI would soon be as common as electricity, becoming part of everyday life without much notice. “AI is bringing cognitive abilities to almost everything,” Rowan said. “We’re just scratching the surface of its potential, from self-driving cars to AI-designed medicines.”

However, Rowan didn’t shy away from discussing the potential challenges AI poses for the workforce. As AI takes over many repetitive tasks, job disruption is inevitable. “There will be some social unrest—protests, strikes—as AI starts automating roles in areas like budgeting and marketing,” Rowan warned. But he also noted that this shift could free people up for more fulfilling, high-level work.

Rowan urged a focus on retraining and continuous learning to adapt to this evolving landscape. “Who’s preparing the workforce for the next level?” he asked, stressing that education shouldn’t end at university but continue throughout one’s career. He advocated for a culture of “unlearning and relearning” to keep pace with technological changes.

When discussing the importance of the Digital Agenda Cyprus Summit, Rowan praised its role in fostering innovation and collaboration. “Cyprus has a lot going for it—technical universities, an appealing tax regime, and an influx of foreign talent,” he said. Rowan believes that events like this are essential for sparking the kind of conversations and collaborations that could lead to Cyprus producing the next trillion-dollar companies.

As a well-known author and technology columnist, Rowan has spent years advising companies on how to navigate disruption. His book Non-Bullshit Innovation: 17 Proven Ways to Transform How You Work provides businesses with strategies for thriving in an ever-changing world.

Rowan’s takeaway for Cyprus was clear: the island has the tools and potential to become a hub for AI innovation, but it must embrace both the opportunities and challenges ahead. Staying ahead of the curve will require constant learning, collaboration, and adaptability.
