A significant infrastructure overhaul has officially commenced in Larnaca, marking a transformative period for the city’s central streets and squares.

Miltiades Neophytou Civil Engineering Contractors & Developers Ltd has taken charge of the project, which aims to revamp the city centre, making it more pedestrian-friendly. Special attention will be given to accommodating pedestrians, including those with disabilities, as well as cyclists and public transport.

According to the official release, several key streets in Larnaca will be renovated, including Ermou, Zinonos Kiteos, Dimitriou, Nikolaou Rossou, Kosma Lisioti, Kosta Savva, Nikolaou Lanithi, Mitsi, Evantias Pieridou, Filiu Zanetou, Galileou, and Evriviadi. In addition to the street upgrades, two new modern squares will be developed: one at the intersection of Rossou, Ermou, and Zinonos Kiteos streets, and the other on Dimitriou street. All the streets mentioned will be fully pedestrianised as part of this initiative.

The scope of the work includes resurfacing roads, removing old asphalt and replacing it with paving stones, updating road markings, and widening pavements. Improvements to the underground utilities and rainwater drainage system are also part of the project, along with upgrades to the area’s aesthetics through the planting of trees and shrubs. Street furniture will be added, and modern street lighting will be installed to enhance night-time visibility.

Modernising Central Larnaca’s Streets and Squares

This ambitious project was initially designed by AF Modinos and SA Vrahimis Architects and Engineers, with the goal of making the area more functional, aesthetically appealing, and safer for both pedestrians and vehicles.

The first attempt to secure a contractor took place on November 8, 2023, but it was unsuccessful due to only receiving one bid. The municipality determined that the low approved budget was the main factor behind this outcome. After increasing the budget, a second tender was issued, which was successfully won by Miltiades Neophytou Civil Engineering Contractors & Developers Ltd.

The total estimated cost for modernising Larnaca’s central area is approximately €14 million, with the project being primarily funded through EU grants.
