Consumer activity in Cyprus accelerated sharply in October 2025, demonstrating strong spending capacity across key retail segments. Data released by the Statistical Service (Cystat) reveals that the Turnover Volume Index of Retail Trade – a measure of actual goods sold – increased by 10.1% compared to the same month last year. The corresponding Turnover Value Index also saw a significant climb, rising by 7.6%.

Sectoral Highlights: Where Consumers are Spending

The substantial growth in volume indicates that consumers are purchasing a greater quantity of goods, with three sectors recording the largest year-on-year increases:

Sector Volume Change Value Change Implication
Clothing and Footwear +24.4% +15.3% Very high demand, likely driven by new season purchases.
Specialised Food, Beverages, Tobacco +15.3% +12.9% Strong demand for specialty and convenience grocery items.
Other Household Equipment +12.8% +11.0% Continued investment in home improvements and durable goods (e.g., construction materials, furniture, electrical appliances).

Year-to-Date Performance and Exceptions

The robust October figures reinforce the overall positive trend for the year. For the period from January to October 2025, the total retail trade volume index is up 7.8%, and the value index is up 6.4% compared to the corresponding period in 2024.

Despite the broad-based gains, one category saw a notable decline:

  • Retail Sale Not in Stores: This category, which includes non-store and mail-order sales, saw the largest decrease, dropping by 7.5% in volume and 10.7% in value compared to October 2024. This contrasts with the strong performance of physical stores.

The data underscores persistent consumer confidence and a healthy appetite for physical retail purchases in the run-up to the holiday season.
