Cyprus is making strides towards a digital future, with the government poised to approve the distribution of 100,000 electronic ID cards, as announced by President Nikos Christodoulides. Speaking at the Digital Agenda Cyprus Summit, held at the Nicosia Municipal Theater, the president detailed the plan, which is a crucial step in the nation’s move towards a more digitally integrated state.
During his address, Christodoulides highlighted the upcoming decision by the Council of Ministers, set to meet later in the day. He noted, “At 11:00 a.m., we will approve incentives for the electronic ID, including features like the digital signature, which will improve security, efficiency, and the speed of transactions, ensuring that government services are delivered seamlessly and securely.”
The initiative aims to make 100,000 electronic IDs available over the next three years to citizens of the Republic aged 18 and older. The president emphasized the significance of this move, explaining that the decision will serve as a cornerstone in the gradual digital transition of the state.
Christodoulides explained that the new IDs, which will be valid for three years with an option for renewal, will allow for fast and secure electronic identification. This will enable citizens to access information systems and services with enhanced security measures. Furthermore, the ID cards will be recognized at the European level, allowing for cross-border transactions across EU member states.
Another key feature of the electronic ID is its use in electronic document signing, which will hold the same legal validity as a traditional handwritten signature. This will enable citizens to complete electronic transactions that currently require physical signatures, making the process more convenient and efficient.
President Christodoulides expressed optimism about the positive impact of this initiative on both the public and private sectors. He believes that it will provide a significant boost to the development of fully digital services in Cyprus, ultimately enhancing the day-to-day experiences of citizens and businesses alike.
