Cyprus has seen a reduction in irregular migration and asylum applications, according to Deputy Minister of Immigration Nikolas Ioannides. Speaking on Monday during the presentation of the Deputy Ministry’s budget to the House Budgetary Committee, Ioannides highlighted the downward trend and outlined efforts to address migration challenges.

Budget Overview
The Deputy Ministry of Immigration’s 2025 budget totals €55.84 million, with €40.25 million (72%) allocated for operational costs and €15.59 million (28%) earmarked for development projects. These funds will focus on upgrading infrastructure, including reception centers and digital systems.

Operating expenses for reception and hospitality centers are set at €13.4 million, while infrastructure projects under the Interior Ministry’s purview amount to €14.7 million.

Migration Trends
Ioannides reported a rise in residence permits across all categories, except for beneficiaries of international protection. By October 2024, nearly 9,000 individuals were repatriated, while asylum applications dropped to 6,123, a significant decline compared to 11,617 in 2023.

The Deputy Minister acknowledged ongoing migration challenges but assured that measures are in place, including enhanced infrastructure and stronger efforts to combat illegal migration.

Addressing Migration Issues
Authorities have transferred third-country nationals previously stranded in the buffer zone to designated centers, with plans for their repatriation. Policies aimed at integrating migrants into Cypriot society are also being developed to ensure a smoother transition for those granted residence.
