Nicosia is making strides in improving urban life through cutting-edge digital technologies, according to Mayor Charalambos Proutzos, who emphasized that these advancements are about more than just going digital—they aim to significantly improve the quality of life for residents. Speaking at the Digital Agenda Cyprus Summit, held at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre, Proutzos explained that the goal is to streamline the city’s infrastructure, reduce energy consumption, and create a more efficient urban ecosystem.
During the event, two new initiatives were introduced, marking the city’s push toward digital transformation:
Proutzos also highlighted the involvement of CYENS, a research and innovation center at the forefront of this digital shift. CYENS specializes in fields like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Data Science, and Emerging Technologies, offering essential resources for both businesses and public organizations. These efforts aim to accelerate the adoption of technologies such as Digital Twins, Health, Education, and Cultural Heritage, transforming Nicosia into a more connected and responsive smart city.
Proutzos further explained that CYENS is actively fostering startups and entrepreneurs through incubation programs and specialized training. This support for innovation strengthens Nicosia’s position as a leader in digital transformation. As the city collects data from smart platforms, it will be able to use AI-based models to enhance urban planning, disaster management, and various citizen services.
The mayor stressed that technology must serve to bridge societal gaps, ensuring that all community members benefit from these advancements. He noted that the municipality is already using data from waste management, smart parking, and air quality applications to guide important urban planning decisions.
Proutzos concluded by urging policymakers, innovators, and community leaders to collaborate on shaping a sustainable and technologically advanced future for Nicosia. He invited everyone to share ideas and work together to build a city centered on innovation, sustainability, and community participation.
