The Republic of Cyprus has officially launched the “Digital Citizen” app, modeled after Greece’s “Gov.gr Wallet.” Available on both Google Play and the App Store as of December 5, this development marks a significant step in the collaboration between the two nations in the realm of digital transformation, according to a joint statement from Cyprus’ Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy and Greece’s Ministry of Digital Governance.
The app was created as part of a memorandum of understanding between the two ministries, focusing on exchanging expertise and implementing digital services to better serve citizens. Looking ahead, the “Digital Citizen” and “Gov.gr Wallet” are slated to integrate by the first quarter of 2025, allowing digital documents to be mutually recognized by both countries. This interoperability will simplify identification and transaction processes for citizens in Cyprus and Greece.
A Milestone in Digital Transformation
Dr. Nicodemos Damianou, Cyprus’ Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, hailed the launch as a “key milestone” in the nation’s digital transformation journey. He noted that the upcoming integration with Greece’s platform would have a profound impact on citizens by facilitating easier cross-border interactions.
Damianou also highlighted the broader partnership between the two nations, stating, “We are expanding our collaboration into new areas as agreed during the recent Cyprus-Greece Intergovernmental Summit, advancing together into the digital age.”
A Model for European Cooperation
Dimitris Papastergiou, Greece’s Minister of Digital Governance, emphasized the significance of the “Digital Citizen” app as a product of the partnership. He described it as the “Cypriot equivalent” of the Gov.gr Wallet and the first tangible outcome of the two nations’ cooperation in digital transition.
Papastergiou underlined the importance of sharing best practices to achieve successful digital transformation, adding, “This collaboration serves as a model for addressing major issues at the European level, ensuring the best results for our citizens.”
The joint initiative not only strengthens ties between Cyprus and Greece but also sets an example of how countries can work together to drive forward digital innovation for the benefit of their citizens.
