Cyprus has recorded an exceptional tourism performance over the first nine months of 2024, with Deputy Minister of Tourism, Costas Koumis, calling it “the best nine months on record” for the sector. Speaking at the inauguration of the Cyprus Airways Flying Academy at Larnaca Airport, Koumis shared his optimism about continued success into 2025.
“This year has brought unprecedented numbers in both arrivals and revenue,” he noted, expressing satisfaction despite the various challenges impacting the tourism industry. “We began the year with some setbacks due to issues in the Eastern Mediterranean, the global aviation crisis, and economic pressures across Europe, yet we’re very pleased with the results so far.”
Koumis attributed this success to the combined efforts of the tourism ministry, transport ministry, government, airport authorities, and industry partners, all of whom have contributed significantly to driving growth. He also projected a modest rise in winter tourism compared to last year, with many resorts planning to remain open through mid-November—a rare occurrence, he observed.
On Cyprus’ strong flight schedule, Koumis highlighted that 55 airlines from 39 countries are currently operating flights to and from Cyprus, maintaining a robust schedule despite disruptions related to recent events in neighboring Israel. When asked if the recent conflict involving Israel and Iran might affect tourism, Koumis remained optimistic, pointing to the resilience demonstrated by the sector throughout similar crises this year.
Overall, Koumis affirmed that 2024 has yielded “only positive results” for Cyprus tourism.
