Efforts are in full swing as Cyprus gears up for its Presidency of the Council of the European Union, set to begin in January 2026. Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Marilena Raouna, emphasized the heightened pace of preparations following Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting.

Raouna highlighted December as a pivotal period, marking the release of the joint Priority Programme for the Trio Presidency, which includes Cyprus, Poland, and Denmark. This programme will outline objectives for the 18-month term running from January 2025 to June 2026.

Following the Cabinet session, ministers and deputy ministers participated in a specialized briefing on the European Parliament’s legislative process. Delivered by the Head of the Department for Relations with the European Parliament at Cyprus’ Permanent Representation in Brussels, the briefing aimed to prepare officials for their dual responsibilities during the presidency: leading EU Council ministerial meetings and representing the Council in discussions with the European Parliament.

Raouna also noted that on December 17, the Priority Programme for Poland, Denmark, and Cyprus will be formally adopted at the General Affairs Council. This milestone will precede the commencement of Poland’s term at the helm on January 1, 2025.
