House to Vote on Constitution Amendment for Environmental Rights

On Thursday, the House of Representatives will decide on a proposed constitutional amendment that enshrines the right to a healthy and sustainable environment. The bill, referred back to the House by President Nikos Christodoulides, incorporates additions made by the Law Office and was reviewed by the legal committee on Wednesday.

Background of the Amendment
The amendment was initially approved during the House plenary on December 5, receiving 37 votes in favor. However, constitutional changes require a supermajority, with at least two-thirds of all MPs—equivalent to 38 votes—voting in support. This requirement was among the reasons cited by the president in his referral of the bill for reconsideration.

Legal Committee’s Endorsement
Legal committee chairman Nicos Tornaritis expressed pride in the revised bill, emphasizing its value to both the nation and its citizens. He highlighted that the amendment would empower individuals to address pollution issues through the judiciary and grant them access to essential environmental information.

The plenary vote on this pivotal amendment is expected to set a significant precedent for environmental rights in the country.
